    Counseling, Therapy, Psychotherapy...

Talking about your experiences with a therapist can help you achieve significant changes in many important areas of your life.  Feelings can become more understandable and more bearable.  And you may well develop different ways of responding that work better for you and the people you care about.  It takes courage to get help.  Once you decide to take that step, you may find that starting a conversation with an understanding therapist brings some relief sooner than you expected.  Talking together often leads to feeling less alone, and more hopeful that you can do something to help yourself.

My approach to psychotherapy is warm, active and professional.  I listen closely and thoughtfully.  When you call me, we can begin to sketch out what you want and need.  We may then decide to meet in person, generally the best way to find out if talking together feels helpful to you.  When we meet,
I will be interested in your experience, your understanding of your experience, and will develop impressions of my own to share with you.  We will consider collaboratively the choices before you.  A consultation together may lead to short-term goal-oriented therapy, or develop into deeper psychotherapy work that leads to long-lasting change and growth.

My approach to couples therapy combines a focus on improving communication and intimacy, in ways that are practical and helpful, as well as addressing underlying patterns that affect both partners, that may be out of your awareness.

When considering psychotherapy with children and teenagers, I initially consult with parents to see if I can help them develop a plan to guide the child or teen back toward a desired course of development.  If further help is required, I may then begin psychotherapy with the child or adolescent, all along working in a team approach with the parents.  By working in this step-by-step and collaborative fashion and focusing on the specific needs of each child or teen, we ensure the best possible treatment plan.
